Mayor Roll- Zushi Japanese Bistro, Virginia Beach, VA

In the newly developed area of Town Center in Virginia Beach, there is a quaint sushi spot called Zushi Japanese Bistro. I was overwhelmed by the many specialty sushi items that were available. Nevertheless, I ended up ordering the Mayor Roll. The Mayor Roll is shrimp tempura, crab, granny smith apple, Japanese mayo, avocado, and baby greens wrapped in soy wrap. I’ve tried many specialty sushi rolls but this by far was one of the best I’ve tried.

They also have outstanding cocktails such as the Geisha (Grey Goose, Midori, Gran Marnier) and Saketinis available.

This place is a great after work hangout or a nice rendezvous with that special someone. The ambiance is relaxing and the extensive menu will give you several options to try just about everything. I highly recommend this place.

Thumbs Up- Atlanta, GA

This place has so many delicious options to choose from that it’s hard to decide. However, the restaurant name speaks for itself and doesn’t disappoint.

One weekend, I decided to make a stop and get the Sunday Special: Sassy Scramble, wheat biscuit and shrimp and grits. Two words: THE BEST!

The Sassy Scramble was scrambled eggs with salmon, cream cheese, dill and onions. The wheat biscuit helped compliment the side dish very well. The fish filet was fried whiting and seasoned well accompanied by a bowl of shrimp and grits. The grits were creamy and rich while the spicy sautéed shrimp sat on top of a bed of shredded cheddar cheese.

Every good meal deserves a tasty beverage so I ordered the half lemonade, half tea, which is popular at Thumbs Up.

I will pre-warn you that on the weekends, it gets packed to standing room only, so get there early. Not to mention if they run out, that’s it!

Oohhs and Aahhs- Washington, DC

I recently took a trip to DC over the weekend on business. Luckily, I had time to spare and wanted to get a good Sunday dinner. I heard about this spot on U street that’s been around for some time and had the BEST Sunday dinner around. It’s called Oohhs and Aahs so with a name like that of course I had to check it out.

The atmosphere was once someone’s house so that instantly put me at ease as if I’m going to eat over a friends house. After you place your order, I went upstairs to grab a seat until my meal was ready. I ordered the Fried Chicken Wings, Mac n Cheese and String Beans- which I was told was the most ordered meal on the menu. This first bite was the best! The meal reminded me of home instantly!

The wings were seasoned to perfection, the mac n cheese had the right texture that made you crave more and more. Even the string beans didn’t disappoint. Although this definitely hit the spot on a Sunday, but the ultimate was the Arnold Palmer I requested (half sweet tea- half homeade lemonade). If you are a Southerner like myself, you can appreciate a good glass of sweet tea, especially when you are far away from the Mason Dixon.

If you’re ever in the Washington DC area, I recommend you stop by and check Oohhs and Aahhs out. It’s one of DC’s best kept secrets!
